Vauxhall Neighbourhood Council gained capital funding to renovate an historic narrow boat for an innovative educational and social enterprise programme. On delivery the boat was completely stripped down to the steel shell in order to undertake structural repairs to the hull and allow necessary repairs to the engine, tiller set, and prop shaft.

Once the shell was repaired VNC asked Comtechsa to collaborate on the fitting out works to create a highly efficient interior design to accommodate the restaurant and catering facilities. We used our versatile micro design and interiors skills to achieve the client’s aspirations and specified all the space standards materials and components to be used in the project.

The most challenging aspect was to achieve fully accessible DDA compliance which we overcame by use of gas lifts and ramps so that all members of community could have equality of access and use. The completed narrow boat is intended to operate as a chartered floating restaurant traversing Liverpool’s extensive canal and dock systems.

Completed in 2012 it is now fully operational and in addition to the hospitality events will offer opportunities for educational catering skills development whilst complementing Merseyside’s greatly expanded tourist and events offer.
