The proposals from a consortium of Liverpool City Council, English Estates and others for Edge Lane and Edge Hill involved demolishing 500 homes and creating an urban dual carriageway. A group of the affected residents including Dai though that both aspects were wrong headed, wasteful of money and bad for the city.
Over several years and two public enquiries, we developed alternative proposals, including a detailed design for the road which could carry a greater volume of traffic more safely, and better provide for pedestrians and cyclists without requiring the loss of any homes.
Ultimately the momentum of the official process was too great, and the destructive road scheme was pushed through. (The proposed housing redevelopment has still not materialised.)
